I bought a pair of these from another retailer about six years ago, they're absolutely wonderful! The sole has no rubber - the sandal is 99.9% hemp. The buckles are a bit asinine , it's a ordinary slip-ring that's been wrapped in hemp twine, but it completes the look. About the rubberless sole, you do have diminished traction on hard, smooth surfaces (supermarket floors), but if that same surface is slightly damp you'll be fine. Traction on nearly all other surfaces is comparable to a rubber-soled shoe. Comfort is fantastic after the break-in period, the soles are to the top with hemp structure that will pack out around your feet, providing what amounts to a custom molded insole after a few days of wear. I find them to be every bit as comfortable as my Birkenstocks. When they get wet, they smell like wet hemp. It's a pretty nice smell to some, but others may find it off-putting. My solution? Keep them dry or deal with the smell.
